DVSA Approved Driving Instructor and Former DVSA Driving Examiner

I have been a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor since 2008 and worked as a DVSA Driving Examiner from 2019 to 2025 before returning to full-time driving instruction.

That experience has given me a detailed understanding of both how people learn to drive and the standard expected on the practical driving test.

But qualifications and experience are only useful if they help you become a better driver.

My approach is calm, structured and focused on helping you become a safe, confident and independent driver.

Experience That Helps You

My background gives me experience from both sides of the practical driving test.

As an instructor, I understand the process of helping someone develop new skills over time.

As a former DVSA Driving Examiner, I also understand how those skills are assessed when a candidate drives independently on test.

That does not mean I teach people simply to satisfy an examiner.

It means I can help you understand the standard you are working towards while keeping the bigger objective in mind: learning to drive safely and independently when there is nobody sitting beside you.

Driving tuition is about much more than explaining how to control a car.

People learn in different ways. Some want detailed explanations, some learn more effectively through experience and some need additional reassurance while their confidence develops.

I will adapt my teaching to you rather than expect you to adapt to one fixed method of instruction. Lessons should not feel like a lecture.

I want you to feel comfortable asking questions, understanding why something happened and gradually taking more responsibility for your own driving decisions.

LEARNING THROUGH UNDERSTANDING

Understand What You Are Doing – and Why

I do not want you simply memorising routines or instructions.

I want you to understand what is happening around you, recognise developing risks and consider why one course of action may be safer than another.

That might mean discussing: what you can see; what you cannot yet see; what could happen next; how another road user might affect you; what options you have; and which option gives you the greatest safety margin.

As your understanding develops, you should gradually need less input from me. Eventually, the decisions are yours.

That is what becoming an independent driver means.

POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT

Learning From What Goes Right – and Wrong

I will not expect you to get everything right immediately. Mistakes are treated as learning opportunities.

We can identify what happened, consider why it happened and work out what you can do differently next time. But development is not only about correcting mistakes.

It is equally important to recognise what you are doing well, understand why it worked and learn how to repeat that good decision consistently.

The aim is not perfection during lessons. It is gradual development towards safe, confident and independent driving.

More Than Passing a Driving Test

Passing your practical driving test is an important goal.

But it is one day at the beginning of what may be many decades of driving. My aim is not simply to prepare you for that one test.

It is to help you develop the judgement, understanding and confidence to make safe decisions for yourself long after your driving lessons have finished.
